I WILL NOT BECOME AN AI EXPERT!
And that is despite having spent virtually my entire professional life in IT, starting with my first C64. Over the past 30 years in IT, I have developed software, built IT organisations, led international transformations and worked as CIO of multinational companies.
I have seen many technologies come and go.
And now comes AI.
Of course I use it.
Every day.
I use ChatGPT and have even built my own agent with OpenClaw.
But I am not going to complete one AI training course after another. I am not going to read 20 books about prompt engineering. And I am certainly not going to publish a LinkedIn post every other day about how AI is going to βrevolutionise everythingβ.
Why?
Because to me, AI is a tool. And tools do not solve business problems when the real problem lies somewhere else.
My favourite acronym in this context is: SPOT
Strategy
Processes
Organisation
Tools
The market is producing masses of AI experts. βSell shovels during a gold rushβ probably describes it rather well.
At the same time, however, companies are beginning to realise something: INTRODUCING A NEW TOOL DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MAKE A COMPANY MORE EFFICIENT.
If strategy, processes and organisation are not right, AI can simply become another silo in an already complex system landscape.
Then we have Copilots, Agents and LLMs. But still the same inefficient processes. Still the same organisational interfaces. And still the same unresolved business problems.
That is why my focus remains on business transformation.
I want to understand:
π What are we trying to achieve?
π Why are we trying to achieve it?
π Which processes need to change?
π What organisation do we need?
π And only then: Which tool can support us?
For the technical implementation, I am more than happy to bring in specialists who know AI inside out.
I need to understand WHAT we are doing, WHY we are doing it and what impact it will have on the business.
The HOW can be handled by others who are better at it.
Maybe that is an unfashionable position to take right now.
But I WILL NOT BECOME AN AI EXPERT.
AI will remain a fascinating tool and an exciting hobby for me.
My professional expertise remains:
BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION.
And AI will not change that.
