Why do so many IT transformations fail?
Not because of the technology. But because of a lack of leadership.
In one of my mandates, I took over a programme that was already running a long time:
- Budget massively exceeded
- No longer sustainable
- Trust in management has practically disappeared.
The reaction before:
Even more reports. Even more meetings. Even more concepts.
What was really missing:
Clear responsibility.
Following the acquisition, we have:
- simplified the decision-making structure radically
- clarified responsibilities
- defined a realistic implementation plan
The result:
The programme got back on track.
My experience:
Transformations rarely fail because of the strategy.
They are failing because no one is leading consistently.
